China Lab Guide to Megablock Urbanisms: Call for Contributions

China Lab invites contributors to join us in collectively exploring the phenomenon of large-scale development in China and beyond. Superblocks are the basic unit of China’s urban development, but they are also spatial instruments with social, cultural, environmental, and economic implications, operating between the scales of architecture and the city. These redefined ‘Megablocks’ then become laboratories for the consequences, opportunities, and potential global proliferation of Chinese urban models, reconsidered through the filters of ecology, economics, and ethics. In the bi-lingual Guide to Megablock Urbanisms, China Lab aims to document and advance a wider conversation on the policies and collective experiences of large- scale development that are shaping China’s urban future.

The publication will include a collection of different media, and we welcome representationally and descriptively creative contributions.

SHORT ESSAYS directed at a particular question, manifestos, or personal perspectives.

ARTICLES with in-depth exploration of related topics (historical context, urbanism/planning, environment, society/culture/ethics, economy/real estate/policy, design and practice, architectural critique, and exportation/models outside China) (3000 words or less).

PROJECT DOCUMENTATION of realized or speculative works, from superblock projects to critiques of architectural scale, networks and systems, or urban strategy.

VISUALIZATIONS including photography, mapping, and statistical contexts.

Submissions due: August 30, 2009. Submissions may be edited for content and format. E-mail a brief description of the proposed contribution to info@china-lab.org.
